Indian mythological literature has so much to offer. Compared to Mahabharata, Ramayana, has not been visited in it's original form by readers that much. I really enjoyed this rendition of Ramayana, especially side notes from author mentioning how Ramayana was adapted in each religion revisions, how few stories were originated which were not there in original Walmiki Ramayana. This is not ur book if you are considering it as introduction to Ramayana. But it's a definite read to get a fresh and ve Indian mythological literature has so much to offer. Well researched, as most of Devdutt's books are. Will help the reader look at mythology in a new light. Well researched, as most of Devdutt's books are. Will help the reader look at mythology in a new light. ...more

A retelling of the Sanskrit epic "Ramayana" or, rather, the various versions of the same as, apparently, there are many. A glossary of terminology (and pronunciation) would have been useful but meaning was generally unimpeded. Like most myths, characters act in seemingly strange ways bound by all sorts of arbitrary rules. Not that different from various myths from Greek/Roman cultures. I bought 'Sita, an Illustrated Retelling of Ramayana' by Devdutt Pattnayak 4years back.I always found 'Ramayana' boring, so I let it sit on my shelf for four years. My prejudiced against the text did not make me go beyond the first four pages. I realise, now that the time was not ripe then for me to understand depth of the epic as explained in the 'Sita'

In a nutshell the book gives the essence of life. It highlights the pain that gnaws at the human heart, no matter how learned. The insatiable human lust for more blinds us to the fact that happiness lies in freedom from desire and not in its indulgence. It reminds us life is a cyclic process and no task remains undone, things left half done in this life will be accomplished in the next.(A matter of belief)
The author is a master craftsman.
He weaves in his story the key to a happy life. The story flows like a natural stream calming and invigorating the mind and body.
It is a spiritual journey. Enjoyed every bit of it . Was so sad when it ended that I swallowed the credits too. Needs to be read repeatedly if one is keen to internalise the essence of the book.
My rating 5/5

Sita: An Illustrated Retelling of the Ramayana

This book is written in a very easy to understand language however it remains rich in its content. Some very interesting facts such as Laksman's attempt to commit suicide, Sita's freedom after her exile are somethings I learnt from this book. A very interesting feature of this book is its grey boxes which takes the reader to the root cause of present events. For instance one of the sections talks about the genesis of the ashwamedha yagya. As always, truly wonderful. One of those rare authors who can demand a spellbound audience.
Not only does this show us Sita in a new light but also provokes us to think.

One of many to be read by Devdutt :)
